You need to be acquiring accurate topographical maps of your immediate and surrounding areas. A good place to start with that is at this link.

This is a good start to intelligence gathering.

Follow it up with what we in the intelligence community call "atmospherics". What's the attitude of the local population? What are they saying? What are they doing? What are they planning to do when the trouble starts?
